WEBJan 21, 2018 — We are looking to start hay-making on our 3-5 acres of pasture for our horses. I'm torn between using used-smaller cutting & baling equipment like John Deere or New Holland (but I'm not sure of the HP needs) or getting new & smaller Chinese, Indian, or Italian made equipment (intended fo small hobby farms).

WEBApr 20, 2010 — I started baling in the late 50's with a nh 68 baler w/ 15hp wisconson motor with a wagon behind on hills pulled with a Super H w/ maybe 28 hp. We also conditioned hay with a Farmall F-12 (12-15hp maybe!) I would suggest a 7' haybine on your tractor if you could find one. Amount of hay on the fields matters also - ours run 100-125 bales/acre.

WEBFeb 3, 2011 — Anyone have experience using a baler on an 8N using a Sherman or Hupp in under-drive? I am thinking with one of the under-drive units would allow for maximum engine power at 540 PTO speed making use of a baler more practical. I have seen a few members on here are baling hay with similar sized tractors and would appreciate any input.

If rainfall keeps it's pace one will probably also need a tedder. Are you interested in sq or rd baling? I won't bale hay on 50/50 share as one ends up with around $50 per rd bale invested in the hay.
