Hurricane Beryl was already a powerful Category 4 hurricane when it barreled through Grenada in the southeastern Caribbean on Monday, but the monster storm has strengthened again — into a rare early-July Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds as fierce as 165 mph.

Hurricane Beryl has reached Category 5 status, the earliest Category 5 storm in the Atlantic on record, according to the Associated Press. The first major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) doesn’t typically form until Sept. 1, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
