A case of West Nile Virus has been found in Cumberland County. A resident in their 40s has tested positive. Health officials believe they caught the virus locally. This is the first time since 2020 that a locally acquired West Nile Virus infection has been found in a Maine resident.

The Maine CDC says this is the first locally-acquired case of the mosquito-borne illness in Maine since 2020. The case was detected in a Cumberland County resident in their 40s. The Maine CDC says the positive test result is presumptive as they wait for confirmation from the U.S. CDC.

The resident had not recently left the state, leading health officials to believe the disease was acquired locally for the first time since 2020.
