Thousands of Entergy and other utility customers across the state of Louisiana are out of power as a rare winter snowstorm impacts the area.Statewide, Entergy is reporting 5,159 outages as of 6:40 a.m.

A winter storm swept across south Louisiana on Tuesday morning, covering New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Lafayette in a layer of snow. Highways, roads and schools across the state have been closed — effectively stalling Louisiana's economy.

1. In February 1895, Baton Rouge saw its biggest snowfall to date with 12.5 inches of snow over two days. This looks to be the capital city's snow record for a long time, according to the NWS. 2. In February 1914, the city had its second largest snowfall, totaling 6 inches.
