San Diego County health officials Sunday reported their first case of locally acquired dengue virus, contracted by an Escondido resident.

No additional locally acquired cases have been identified, although there have been at least 49 reported cases of travel-related dengue in the county this year, according to officials.

The illness appeared in an Escondido resident who had not recently traveled anywhere that the mosquito-borne illness is common. The arrival of dengue in San Diego County does not come as a surprise,

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — The County is investigating the first ever case of locally acquired dengue. The Escondido resident who became sick with dengue did not travel to an area where the mosquito transmitted illness is common. No additional locally acquired cases have been identified at this time.

The CDC said about one in four people infected with dengue will experience symptoms such as fever, nausea, rashes, aches, and pains.
